What Does Boho Mean?

The term 'Boho' is derived from the word Bohemian. In the 19th century 'Bohemian' was a term the French used to describe the Gypsy ethnicity tourists that had come there from Bohemia, a region of the Czech Republic. These tourists were wanderers who lived on the margins of society and because of this, in the early 1800's their culture was romanticized. And so, the word bohemian came to mean any student, artist, writer or intellectual who adopted a nonconformist lifestyle with few worldly possessions.

In the 1960s the free spirit of the bohemians and their non-regimented style of dress was adopted by the hippies, who embraced freedom as a sign of their identity.

In modern day the term Boho or Bohemian is primarily associated with fashion and style. This is why the Boho style, or Boho-Chic, is also called “gypsy style”. Modern Boho encompasses trends from the hippie era and still represents a counterculture spirit.

The Oxford English Dictionary defines a “Bohemian” as someone, “especially an artist, literary man, or actor, who leads a free, vagabond, or irregular life, not being particular as to the society he frequents, and despising conventionalities generally”.

In simpler terms a Bohemian is someone who doesn't conform to society and often holds art as their focus above all else. It is someone who lives an unconventional life. It is a way of living that embraces a life full of music, art, literature, and the practice of freedom over possession. It stands for those free spirits who are living a life away from the usual everyday life, and it's stresses.

In this same way Boho style is unconventional, it disengages itself from mainstream fashion. Boho fashion is romantic and flowy and often incorporates elements from different cultures. Colors and patterns are rich and vibrant with elements of nature, blending nude and warm tone with ethnic patterns. Vintage items are combined with modern simplicity to blend old and new together.

Boho is about encouraging a more romantic appearance, it is about enjoying freedom and a creative path. We know how hard it is to find the latest boho trends that fit you and your budget, so we've made it our mission to help you find exactly what you need, at a price point that works for you.
